WiLL/WAND Communications Training for Women Leaders
On December 3-4, 2016, WAND held a communications training in Washington, DC. The training was attended by 25 women legislators and activists from 19 states including Arkansas, Connecticut, Georgia, Idaho, Illinois, Iowa, Kentucky, Maryland, Michigan, Minnesota, Montana, New Jersey, New York, Rhode Island, South Dakota, Utah, Vermont, Washington, and Wisconsin.
The weekend began with a commanding presentation about building and leveraging the power that women leaders have, given by Diane Russell. Jessie Calkins discussed WAND’s budget priorities work, the impact of federal budgeting decisions on state budgets, and highlighted WAND’s work on nuclear weapons. Chelsea Kiene of the Center for American Progress provided tips and best practices for crafting op-eds, letters to the editor, and speeches, as well as guidance on TV interviews and public speeches.
Megan Amundson, Erica Fein, and Diane Russell led participants in a discussion about the importance of women continuing to raise their voices on nuclear weapons and national security issues and how to get policy wins in a difficult political environment. Alex Wirth of Quorum Analytics shared exclusive research about the use of social media by state legislators and guided participants about how to best use digital media tools. Colorado Representative Faith Winter of Wellstone Action guided participants on storytelling and communicating with conviction, working with the press, and crafting a comprehensive communications plan.
During the reception on December 3, training sponsors and WiLL National Partners were thanked and recognized by Senator Sandy Pappas. The December 3 dinner panel included executive media trainer Dee Martin of the Policy Resolution Group and defense reporter Kristina Wong of The Hill sharing their experiences and advice with participants about how to engage with the media and build relationships with journalists.
